SKILL WITH AN ATHLETIC MINDSET
In a recent podcast I discussed what sets our program apart. It's not the drills specifically, but rather the focus on how the drills are instructed. We focus on "repetition without repetition." Or a singular focus, performed in high repetition, in different ways, different speeds, different angles, etc. With this mindset, the athlete gets comfortable in the subtle adjustments they must make on the fly in live action.
I think there is a benefit to coaching skill from an athletic perspective. I think that's what athletes need. Not to only be skillful with a ball at thier feet, but to also be athletic with the ball at their feet. This high speed maneuverability is essential. The reactive adjustments and the fluidity of movement is essential. If we can blend these two qualities (highly skilled and highly athletic), we get the best of both worlds. A program that not only enhances the way we move, but also the way we move while operating in the technical and tactical environment of our sport.
When I look at skill, I don't see the skill. I see the athletic movement around the ball to create what I call an athletic advantage. When I coach skill, I coach the athletic requirements. I coach the agility that is often hidden within the skill. And i have seen average athletes, learn to play at much higher speeds, with more rhythm, with quicker feet and more athletic balance.
